"Cut the cheese?"

Do you ever wonder why we say the things that we do? There are all sorts of things we say like who cut the cheese? Where in the world did that come from? Thought I would see if I could find out. First off let me just say that I am tickled at how many listings there are about cutting cheese. There's a wine and cheese site, there's a recipe (yep a recipe), there's a book out that has sold 100,000 copies that is in it's 13th printing....LOL
So for anyone interested-Cut has been used to mean passing gas since the 1800's, but instead of saying, "Cut the cheese" one would say that their finger had been cut. The phrase, "Cut the cheese" began in the 1950's. For obvious reasons, when you cut into rinded cheeses they get smellier.
Have a great day everyone.

  3. That is some great trivia! I had never really thought about the origin of that, but I have wondered about the origin of other things.

  4. Hhahahah I have always wondered about that saying! And many others... The English language can be so strange.
